Book Binding Methods

The four common binding methods used by us at Printabook are as follows:

• Perfect Binding
• Hardcover / Case Binding
• Saddle Stapled Binding (Fold, Staple, Trim)
• Wire Binding

We explain each bookbinding method in detail below.

PERFECT BINDING

Perfect binding is accomplished by firstly putting all the printed pages together in order. Then the spine edge is roughed up with a blade, which makes notches that a flexible adhesive glue is applied to. Once the glue is covering the spine the printed cover is then attached. Once the glue has dried, the book is then trimmed to the final size. Paperback novels are a great example of a perfect bound publication.

HARDCOVER / CASE BINDING

Hardcover binding or Case binding is a very traditional method of binding for books.

This type of publication is usually sewn together in sections and attached to the inside of a case with endpapers which are tipped on to the bookblock and then glued into the case. The complete book is then placed into a hydraulic press to ensure that it dries properly and does not warp. It is a time consuming process for each book but it ensures that each publication will be long lasting and highly durable.

Limited edition books, best sellers and reference books are all great examples of a Hardcover bound or Case bound publication.

SADDLE STAPLE (FOLD, STAPLE, TRIM) BINDING

The Saddle Staple binding process is as simple as 2 staples, a fold and a trim. This process is cheaper because of the reduced binding cost. These publications are limited to about 80 pages in size as thicker booklets are difficult to fold.

There is an option of using the same weight (type) of paper throughout your book or using a thicker card as a cover. We can also offer you the option of a square spine that is stapled. Short-run magazines are a great example of a Saddle Stitched publication. The Perfect Binding process mentioned above is the better option for thicker books with a greater number of pages.

WIRO BINDING

Wiro binding is a popular alternative to both Perfect and Case binding and comes in a variety of forms and colours.

In the method of Wiro binding the inner pages and cover are multi-punched down one edge (normally the spine or top of the publication) to allow a steel wire comb to be inserted and clenched to form the finished book. Recipe books and Cookbooks are great examples of a Wire bound publication.
